Residents of a Pearl City townhouse that caught fire shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday are safe, authorities said.

Fire officials said the began in an upstairs bedroom of the complex, located at Kipaipai Street.

Officials said a total of 10 people -- including three children -- live in the home and eight were home when the fire started.

Police said quick-thinking neighbors may have saved the family.

"It woke me up when I smelled (it)," said neighbor Grace Brown.

Witnesses said neighbors began hosing down the house with water hoses in both the front and back yard.

Two men living at the home were also able to douse the flames while still inside. They were later treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Officials said the fire victims will receive assistance from the American Red Cross.

In all, officials said the fire caused nearly $53,000 in damage, though there is no word on what caused the blaze.
