A 45-year-old man died while Honolulu police officers were taking him into custody late Monday night in Waianae, authorities said.

Officers subdued the suspect after a brief struggle and said he became unresponsive.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Police said they were called to the scene after receiving a call that an armed man was threatening people.

The suspect had taken drugs and was acting paranoid, police said. Authorities also said the man had a history of hypertension, that he was not taking his medication and that methamphetamine and marijuana were found in his home.
