Honolulu's medical examiner is retiring after a 25-year career with the city, KITV has learned.

Dr. Kanthi De Alwis said she plans to pursue other interests.

Her departure comes the same month that the city announced the medical examiner's office has received national accreditation.

De Alwis became deputy city medical examiner in 1990 and was elevated to head the office in 2001.

In the last four years, three medical examiner employees filed complaints alleging mismanagement, unprofessional behavior and favoritism in the office.

Her retirement has nothing to do with those complaints, city officials said.
