Jury Finds HPD Prosecuted Worker Because Of Lawsuit

HONOLULU -- A federal court jury awarded a former Honolulu Police Department social worker who sued the force $150,000.Sharon Black won a large sexual harassment settlement against HPD in 2001. She said she believed that the department later maliciously investigated and prosecuted her for mishandling autopsy records.The criminal case against her ended in a mistrial.A federal court jury found that the sexual harassment lawsuit was a motivating factor in the criminal prosecution and awarded Black $150,000 in emotional damages.City officials said the county plans to appeal the verdict.
