Parents At Obama's Former School Protest FurloughsParents, Teachers Plan Demonstration At CapitolPOSTED: 6:53 pm HST October 21,
2009 HONLULU -- At the public school in Manoa where President Barack Obama, parents are planning to join hundreds of parents across the state to protest at the State Capitol on Friday, the first day of public school teacher furloughs. They said the president would be dismayed by the number of school days children will miss.Parents and grandparent of students at Noelani Elementary School are upset about upcoming teacher furlough days. Amy Langudino has two children at Noelani."It's pretty disappointing. I feel if you shortchange education you are shortchanging the future of our children," Langudino said."When you think of 17 days of school missed, it is almost a month. I think that's going to affect their education," said grandparent Nancy Weisner.Obama attended kindergarten at Noelani. Some Noelani parents imagine the president would be upset about furloughs when he's calling for more education for all children."The challenges of the new century demand more time in the classroom," Obama said in a recent speech."I thought it was greatly ironic that in his home state we have now the shortest school day in the United State with the 17-day cut," said parent Vernadette Gonzales.Gonzales is a professor at the University of Hawaii. She and other Noelani parents are organizing a protest at Noelani Friday."I have a five year old who just started school this semester she loves school and she does not understand why 17 days are being taken away from her," said Gonzales.Noelani parents later Friday will join up with hundreds of other parents protesting at the state capitol."I think the furloughs need to go away," Gonzales said.Noelani's School community council has decided this year not to make any special accommodation to make up for lost classroom time. The school said furloughs came too fast, but next year it hopes to find ways to make up classroom education.
