Honolulu police and fire officials have now completely cleared the scene of a double fatal car crash on Kalanianaole Highway near Makapu'u Beach on Oahu's windward coast.

Police and fire officials said the single-car crash occurred at about 2 a.m. when the driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old man, lost control of the vehicle, hit the shoulder of the highway and became airborne after launching off of the embankment. The car finally landed on its roof inside a structure on the property of the Oceanic Institute after hitting a tree and some wire fencing.

The driver and the passenger, a 20-year-old man, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

"The airbags did deploy," said Capt. Letha Decaires, with the Honolulu Police Department. "We don't believe that either person had seatbelts on."

Police believe that speed may have been a factor and are investigating to se whether the car had been racing at the time of the crash, but did not specify how fast the car was going at the time of the crash.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

According to police, the car was traveling from Waimanalo toward Makapu'u at the time of the crash.

Employees at the Oceanic Institute said the building the vehicle struck was a storage room for its shrimp aquaculture program. Maintenance and security workers on duty at the time were not injured.

As a tow truck righted the crushed vehicle, shingles from the building's rooftop stuck to the car.

The victims' family and friends gathered across the street from the crash to talk to police and comfort each other.

Police blocked off traffic on Kalanianaole Highway from the Makapu'u Lighthouse to the Makai Pier immediately following the accident at 2:30 am. The roadway was closed for about five and a half hours.

Traffic was resumed normally once the scene was clear just before 8:30 a.m.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Honolulu Police Department.
