Hundreds turned out Monday to celebrate the life of a Farrington High School student who died after a boat hit him while he was free diving off Hawaii Kai.

An overflow crowd at New Hope's Sand Island facility to celebrate the short life of Keahi Lum, 17.

Lum was killed while skin diving off China Walls near Maunalua Bay. He was struck by a boat and killed by the propeller, officials said.

Lum was an avid spear fisherman, friends said. He was active at New Hope, serving on the church safety team.

Lum would have been one of the first graduates of the Farrington High School's culinary academy, where he was a senior. His instructor, Paul Onishi, made an emotional presentation of a personalized chef's jacket to Lum family. His name will be memorialized on the culinary team's jackets.

His classmates came to the memorial and sang for him.

In the eulogy, his pastor spoke of Lum's great potential, which was unfortunately cut short.

"He's just a great individual all the way around. It's good to see young people have so much potential in their lives and you see them serving. He was part of our ministry here, part of our security/safety team so he's a wonderful kid," the Rev. Elwin Ahu said.

Lum is survived by his parents, his grandmother and sisters.
