Structural Damage Closes UH's Gartley HallOfficials Hope To Renovate Building Rather Than Demolish ItPOSTED: 2:58 pm HST September 29, 2009 HONOLULU -- Gartley Hall at the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus will be closed due to major structural damage. The project could cost UH more than $13 million. In the last three years, minor repairs like wooden beams were installed for reinforcement.Over the weekend, inspectors found the 88-year-old building is deteriorating much faster than initially anticipated. The foundation sustained severe water damage causing rebar to rust, the building to shift and leaving the floor warped, officials said. The building will no longer hold classes after Tuesday.University officials said they would rather preserve the building than demolish it."It's a known problem and drainage is a real issue here, and we're constantly working with (Mid Pacific Institute) up street and the city and county to mitigate our downstream water conditions," Assistant Vice Chancellor Dave Hafner said.Other campus buildings are also being inspected.A couple thousand Gartley Hall students and faculty will be relocated until further notice.
