Police and fire rescue crews found the body of a missing Japanese tourist late Saturday night.

His body pulled from waters off Waikiki just before midnight.

The medical examiner's office identified the victim as Yo Ichiro Yamada, 29. He was last seen in waters off the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Friday afternoon.

There was a massive search, but no sign of the man.

Police recovered Yamada's body at about 11:45 p.m. Fire teams found Yamada floating in waters off the Hilton Hawaiian Village pier often used by Atlantis Submarines.

Emergency medical services personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The recovery ended two days of massive searching off of Waikiki. For nearly two days, an HFD chopper hovered over the Waikiki shoreline as rescue crews searched for Yamada. The department's fireboat and divers scoured the water fronting the Hilton. They combed the ocean from Diamond Head to the Honolulu International Airport's Reef Runway.

The Coast Guard focused on the area between the runway and Kalaeloa.

Yamada had been snorkeling with his family Friday morning, in the ocean fronting the Hilton. His family returned to shore, but Yamada decided to go out one more time by himself.

His family told firefighters he was not a strong swimmer.

"He knew he was not a strong swimmer and therefore they reasoned that he wouldn't venture too far beyond the reef of the area," Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha said.

Yamada's body was found after the search effort had been suspended for the day.

"Normally a three day span, if someone is in the water and has drowned, it's going to be within that three-day period that the body would tend to float back to the surface, unless it's lodged underwater somewhere," Kealoha said.

Yamada was scheduled to return to Japan with his family Saturday.

Most of his tour group returned to Japan while others stayed behind, including his parents and sister. The family was traveling with the Japan Travel Bureau. JTB and the Hilton staff are helping the family with the necessary arrangements.

Yamada was from the Kanegawa prefecture just outside of Tokyo.
