Council Discusses Recycling ProposalMaui, Kauai Already Cut To One Pickup Per WeekPOSTED: 3:44 p.m. HST March 14, 2003 HONOLULU -- For the first time since Mayor Jeremy Harris announced his curbside-recycling plan, City Council members had the opportunity to question city officials on it Friday.
Under the new proposal, each week, there will be one pickup for recyclables, including plastic, glass, newspaper and green waste. There would be another pickup for regular trash. Right now, regular trash gets picked up twice a week.
"Can you assure that there will be no detrimental health affect from going to single day pick-up on trash?" Councilwoman Barbara Marshall asked.
"Everybody is concerned really about only one thing: that's flies and maggots. The part that is the old pieces of food that will deteriorate, you're supposed to wrap them. If you wrap them nice and tightly, the maggots won't get out of the bag," said acting city Environmental Services director Frank Doyle.
Kauai and Maui already have one pickup a week.
The city estimates 50 percent of Oahu's residents will opt to pay for a second trash pickup, at a cost of $8 a month. That's projected to bring in $8 million to the city.
If the proposal receives quick approval, curbside recycling could start as early as July 1.
