Members of Hawaii's delegation to Congress acknowledged that Tuesday's U.S. Supreme Court decision effectively ended the presidential campaign.
But that doesn't mean they are pleased by it.
In a statement, Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, said, "I believe that a full and accurate recount of the vote in Florida will show Al Gore to have won both the popular and electoral vote.
"The court's cooperation with the Bush campaign's effort to block that count is an unprecedented intrusion into the electoral process ... The Supreme Court has crossed a legal Rubicon and there is no going back."
Rep. Patsy Mink, D-Hawaii, told KITV4 News by phone that she wants to work with President Bush.
"While our differences in policy and programs cannot be swept away, we're going to do everything we can do to support the new president to see what there is that we can agree on and work together," Mink said.
Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, issued his own statement from Washington with a similar theme.
"I will offer (Bush) my support as we prepare for the most striking manifestation of our democracy, the orderly transfer of power," Akaka said. "It is incumbent that all of us join together in working for the good of our country."
