Low-income Hawaii families with HIV or AIDS will receive $1,338,998 in federal grants over the next three years, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Wednesday.

HUD said households will be able to better manage HIV illness and receive appropriate care.

"A permanent home can often be the best medicine for these families who would otherwise be at extreme risk of homelessness," HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said.

The $1.3 million goes to Gregory House Programs of Honolulu. The nonprofit agency has 46 dwellings with rental assistance. It also provides substance abuse counseling, employment training and placement, resource strategies and budgeting.

HUD distributed the HIV and AIDS grants based on the number of AIDS cases reported nationwide. A record $310 million will assist 58,000 U.S. households annually, officials said.
