USS Hawaii Arrives At Pearl Harbor

Vessel Is First Virginia-Class Sub Based At Island Port

Pearl Harbor welcomed its first Virginia-class nuclear submarine Thursday with the arrival of the USS Hawaii SSN 776.

The Navy said the 377-foot long vessel is one of the newest and most technologically advanced submarines in the U.S. fleet.

Hawaii officials attended a ceremony marking the start of the USS Hawaii's new homeport at 9:30 a.m. Gov. Linda Lingle declared Thursday USS Hawaii Day.

The new vessel brings 134 crew members and their families.

A second Virginia-class sub, the USS Texas, will arrive in the fall to join the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

The additions are part of the military's build up of submarines in the Pacific Ocean.
