Big Island Police Say Speed Involved In Fatal Crash

Motorcyclist Killed After Broadsiding Car At Intersection

Big Island police said speed was involved in the crash of a motorcycle and car in Hilo on Monday.

The crash happened at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road and Makalika Street shortly before noon.

A 67-year-old Kurtistown woman was turning left onto Hawaii Belt Road when a motorcycle traveling north on the roadway slammed into the car in the intersection, police said.

Emergency personnel treated the victim and took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 2:05 p.m.

Authorities identified the motorcyclist as Joseph Flood Sr., 57, of Hilo. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The driver of the car was not injured.
