Police Reclassify Big Island Death Homicide

Examiner Determined Gunshot Wound Not Self-Inflicted

Big Island police on Thursday declared the death of a Puna woman a homicide.

On Tuesday, police were called to the home of Kaycee Smith, 21, in Orchidland Estates. A friend reported to that she found Smith's body with a fatal gunshot wound.

Police ordered an autopsy and classified the case as a coroner's inquest.

The medical examiner concluded that Smith's gunshot wound to the head was a homicide and not self-inflicted. Detectives are continuing with their investigation.
