Convicted murderer Darnell Griffin lashed out after a Circuit Court judge on Wednesday sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the rape and murder of a woman in 1999.

The prosecution said DNA evidence linked Griffin, 50, to the cold case. The defense argued that the killer is still on the loose.

Evelyn Luka, 20, was found unconscious on a dirt median along the H-2 Freeway in Waipio on Sept. 6, 1999.

After the sentencing, Griffin stood up and yelled at the judge and prosecutor, saying he was not fairly tried.

The defense said investigators failed to follow up on other leads that might have revealed other suspects.

Griffin has twice been convicted of murder. The first time was in 1982. When he was out on parole in 1999, Luka was killed. Griffin was convicted of her murder on the basis of DNA evidence.

At Griffin's sentencing on Wednesday, prosecutors and the victim's sister demanded life without parole.

"Our family will be affected for the rest of our lives. We'll never have the love of our sister again. Give him life without parole in fact all we can give him we can't execute him that's all we can give him and that's what I ask for," Luka's brother, John Morimoto, said.

"Both women died of strangulation. That's not a quick death. Imagine the horror those ladies went through knowing they were being killed. Life behind bars is much more compassion than he showed either of those victims," Deputy Prosecutor Kevin Takata said.

Then, Griffin stood and turned and pointed at the family, trying to reargue the case.

"You're in error by saying I did not learn. I did not commit this crime," he said.

As Griffin rambled on, the family looked on in disgust.

"There was a photo lineup with me in it. Not one of those individuals who seen the man three times not one identified me as the guy I didn't look like the guy. I understand your loss. Now my family is suffering a loss," Griffin said.

Judge Dexter Del Rosario finally stopped Griffin and sentenced him to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors were happy with the sentence, but disgusted with Griffin's outburst.

"To come up there, to have the nerve to address the family and claim innocence, the jury has spoken," Deputy Prosecutor Leilani Tan said.

Griffin was led away by deputies to spend the rest of his life in prison.
