Big Island Bans Cell Phone Use For Drivers

Nayor Billy Kenoi Signs Ban Into Law

POSTED: 2:12 pm HST June 27, 2009

The Big Island is joining Oahu in banning cell phone use while driving.

Mayor Billy Kenoi signed the ban into law Thursday.

It won't take effect until Jan. 1 on the Big Island, but Oahu's prohibition starts Wednesday.

Kenoi said many people will have to change their behavior because of the new law, but it's worth it because it will save lives and prevent property damages.

Violators may be fined up to $150 per offense. First offenders on Oahu will pay a $67 ticket.

Both regulations also prohibit texting, computer games or using similar hand-held electronic devices.

Talking on cell phones will still be allowed if drivers use hands-free devices.
