Maui firefighters contained an afternoon blaze on Honoapili Highway in Maalaea at around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The Maui Fire Department dispatched 35 firefighters and two helicopters to contain the blaze, which was reported at around 2:15 p.m. Sunday.

The blaze burned up about 80 acres and one home, cutting off traffic heading into West Maui, fire officials said.

Residents in three homes near the area were evacuated and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Firefighters also rescued an employee of First Wind Co.'s Kaheawa Wind Farm, who was cut off from the exit road due to the fire.

High winds of approximately 40 mph were reportedly a factor in the spread of the brush fire, officials said.
