A dozen people are displaced after an apartment caught fire in Waipahu Friday.

Flames damaged a second-floor unit in a three-story, nine-apartment structure along Pupuole Street.

Officials said the blaze caused massive damage to the residence where the fire broke out and also to the unit above it.

"First, I was in my room watching TV," said witness Paul Elanzo, "and then I smelled smoke, and then there was a fire."

Honolulu firefighters had the 2-alarm fire under control by 8:30 p.m., about 25 minutes after the blaze began.

Residents said they could feel the fire but no one was seriously injured.

"I saw from my balcony in the back, flames (were) just rushing up to the third floor and it was steaming hot," said witness Foli Tavea.

Authorities said 12 people lived in the second-floor unit -- the youngest was an infant and the oldest was 58 years old.

Honolulu police shut down Pupuole Street while firefighters battled the blaze.

There was no word on what caused the fire yet, but officials estimate that it caused about $160,000 in damage.

Red Cross officials were called to the scene, but there is no word on whether any of the residents needed their help.
