Students, teachers and parents of Wailupe Valley Elementary School had a bittersweet final day on Monday.

After 50 years, the Department of Education is closing the school for good due to budget concerns.

Enrollment to the school had been declining, with only 75 students attending the final day, officials said. The largest class only had 15 students and several only had nine.

"It's a bit sad, our school closing after 50 years, and it hurts adults to see children sad, so the ohana, parents decided to arrange this fun day for youngsters," Principal Susan Okano said.

The students' final day of school was more like a carnival, filled with games, rides and raffles. However, the day wasn't all fun and games, as many parents expressed remorse for the school shutting down.

"It is sad, you know. The feeling is like a public/private school. Everybody knows everybody from sixth grade to kindergarten," parent Fred Cresanto said. "If you can't pick up your kids, just meet at McDonalds for pickup. It is a big ohana."

Most of the students will attend Aina Haina Elementary in the Fall.
