A jury on Friday decided that a defendant found guilty of stabbing another man to death should be eligible for life in prison.

Glenn Keohokapu stabbed Steven Wilcox last year outside the Kaneohe bar Club Komo Mai when Wilcox tried to intervene in the Keohokapus' argument.

The jury convicted Keohokapu of manslaughter, not murder. The jurors decided he could get a longer sentence after hearing information they were not allowed to hear in his trial.

The jury learned after the trial that Keohokapu had three prior felony convictions for burglary, robbery and drugs. The jury members were also told about his history of abusing his wife.

The decision now goes to the judge, who must agree in order for Keohokapu to face a longer sentence.

Without the extended sentencing, Keohokapu faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
