2009 HONOLULU -- A woman whose husband stabbed a man to death for trying to intervene in their argument was forced to testify about her husband's violence against her, which could condemn him to more time in prison."This is a part of my life that I never wanted to dig back up," Kauilani Keohokapu testified.Especially not when her testimony could put her husband, Glenn, in prison for life. Glenn Keohokapu stabbed Steven Wilcox last year outside a Kaneohe bar when Wilcox tried to intervene in the Keohokapus' argument. The jury convicted Glenn Keohokapu of manslaughter, not murder. now they are being asked to decide if he deserves a murderer's sentence based on information they were not allowed to hear in the trial. The jury learned on Wednesday that Glenn Keohokapu had three prior felony convictions for burglary, robbery and drugs. The jury members were also told about his history of abusing his wife. She broke down when asked to reveal details of abuse. Kauilani Keohokapu reluctantly admitted being choked, slapped, bitten, kidnapped and threatened during several incidents as far back as 1996.She was particularly defensive about a temporary restraining order against her husband three months before the fatal stabbing. At first saying she lied about abuse. Then she confirmed it."So, it's correct that he pushed you, grabbed you, choked your neck? That's all correct?" a prosecutor asked?"On March 9? Uh huh," she said. The jury must decide whether Glenn Keohokapu's record makes life in prison necessary to protect the public. The sentencing trial could last at least another day.
