Rangers at Haleakala National Park on Tuesday retrieved the body of a man who appears to have died in a horse riding accident.

A visitor reported seeing the body of Edward Wilson on Halemau'u Trail at the park on Monday. Rangers reached the scene but could not recover the body until first light on Tuesday.

Wilson is a regular horseback rider in the wilderness areas of the park, officials said. He was an experienced horseman, officials said.

The scenic trail has steep areas and weather can change quickly, park officials said.
