Volunteers went to the state Capitol Monday in an effort to promote energy efficiency.

The volunteers from Kanu Hawaii were easy to spot at the state Capitol parking lot.

The wore bright yellow shirts with the words "I Can" written across the front, kneeling and checking the tire pressure of each vehicle.

"We're leaving a little card with numbers that says, 'Here's your tire pressure. Check it based on what it should be,'" Kanu Hawaii board member Alani Apio said.

Kanu Hawaii was trying to send a duel message.

"Under inflated tires waste gas, but they also waste money, and on top of that the more gas you burn, the co2 you release into the atmosphere," Kanu Hawaii's Kamaile Kekahuna said.

The yellow-shirted volunteers also hit each Capitol office to switch out old lightbulbs with more energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights.

The light bulb swap was also going down at the Capitol auditorium.

Kanu Hawaii said that if everyone at the state Capitol changes just one bulb and maintain proper tire pressure. It would prevent 109 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year and save 350 barrels of oil, 6,300 gallons of gasoline.

Those are not the only reasons why the nonprofit organization is making the effort.

"It's just to get our community involved and engaged because that's what our community is all about. Because that's what Kanu Hawaii is all about. We have people who have made commitments to be here today," Kekahuna said.

Kanu Hawaii has been lobbying lawmakers on many environmental issues especially a proposed ban of on all future fossil fuel plants in Hawaii.
