Honolulu police arrested a University of Hawaii Manoa student Thursday during a demonstration on campus by a religious anti-homosexual group from California.

A group of five people from Bema Ministries traveled from the mainland to preach in Hawaii. The members preach on college campuses and at large events such as Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl, according to their Web site.

The group tried to demonstrate at UH Manoa's Campus Center on Wednesday, but it did not have permission. The members returned on Thursday with permission.

More than 150 students gathered in the area. Many shouted and booed at those preaching.

One student confronted one of the demonstrators, grabbed a camera and threw it down. Police arrested the male student on criminal property damage charges.

The demonstration comes as the Legislature considers civil unions for same sex couples that would give them the same rights as married couples.
