A Honolulu grand jury on Wednesday morning indicted a man on murder charges in the fatal stabbing of a Waianae High School teacher in Ewa last week.

Tittleman Fauatea bought a foot-long kitchen knife at the Longs store at an Ewa shopping center, walked off without his change and then repeatedly stabbed Waianae High School English teacher Asa Yamashita, according to court documents.

The grand jury indicted Fauatea on a count of second-degree murder.

Fauatea has a history of mental illness. (Read more about his past in an exclusive KITV report.)

A judge on Wednesday ordered Fauatea held on $500,000 bail.

Waianae High School held a candlelight vigil on Tuesday night as a memorial for Yamashita, who was in charge of increasing the school's literacy. More than 1,000 people turned out for the event. Read the account of the service.
