Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon for a Hawaii Army National Guard soldier who died while serving in Kuwait.

Friends and family came to Borthwick Mortuary Tuesday afternoon to say goodbye to Cwislyn Walter, 19. Members of the military also attended the memorial to pay their respects.

Walter was serving with the Hawaii Army National Guard in Kuwait when she was killed in a vehicle accident on Feb. 19. Several members of her unit were also injured in the accident, one of them still recovering from her injuries was consoled by Gov. Linda Lingle at the service.

"When you lose someone so young, so bright, so full of promise it's especially difficult," Lingle said.

Walter graduated from Farrington High School. Originally a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia, she was proud to have recently become an American citizen.

"She was certainly smart and bright. She was qualified as a computer communications specialist and also in another field of personnel," Hawaii Adjutant Gen. Robert Lee said. "From all the feedback I got from her fellow soldiers and commanders she was certainly an outstanding soldier that had a great future in the Army National Guard."

Walter will be buried in Micronesia.
