Wednesday night's Powerball grand prize to nearly $315 million,
making it the game's highest jackpot ever.
The jackpot had been estimated at $280 million.
Lottery officials in Iowa say the new figure came after holiday
sales were much higher than anticipated. Throngs of hopeful winner
bought lottery tickets from convenience stores and gas stations
that were open on Christmas Day.
Powerball is played in 23 states, the District of Columbia and
the U.S. Virgin Islands.
