The Honolulu Police Department made a major fireworks bust recently at a warehouse near Honolulu International Airport.

Police arrested two men and confiscated nearly two truckloads of illegal aerial fireworks.

Police on Tuesday showed off two paddy wagons containing the confiscated fireworks. The haul included those loud, illegal aerial high explosive bombs that can wake you up at 2 a.m.

The street value for the cache of fireworks is about $50,000, police said.

Acting on a tip, officers bought the fireworks from a warehouse on Waiwai Loop, which is just off Lagoon Drive, police said.

"An undercover officer was able to go into the warehouse and purchase illegal aerial fireworks," Maj. Kurt Kendo said.

Police arrested Alfred Bernarte, who operated a company called Tadai International, and David Fan. Both men face class-C felonies that carry up to five years in prison.

The company sold legal fireworks from the warehouse and illegal aerials on the side, police said.

"This warehouse was a commercial warehouse. They have a license to sell commercial-grade fireworks and sell to chain stores legally. However, they're not allowed to sell aerial fireworks to anyone without a permit," Kendo said.

The investigation continues with federal officials now looking into the case. The police bomb squad will eventually destroy the fireworks, officials said.
