HONOLULU -- A Kane'ohe man was ordered held without bail Tuesday to ensure the safety of President-Elect Barack Obama.Mark Miyashiro, 56, is accused of planning to attack Obama on his upcoming trip to Hawaii. Miyashiro told his psychiatrist he wanted to attack Obama with a sling-shot and marble."He believes it will help prove that Obama is the antichrist and to see if he would come back to life," according to the Secret Service affidavit.Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang ordered Miyashiro held without bail."Given that President-elect Obama will be in Hawaii. The government wanted to ensure that Mr. Miyashiro did not have the ability to carry out any of his threats," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren Ching.Miyashiro denied at first having a weapon, but in his Kaneohe house agents found a long-range Russian assault rifle with a retractable bayonet and on the stock was a reference to a bible passage: "Luke 11:21: When a stray man, fully armed, guards his own mansion, his property is safe."Add to that, Miyashiro told the agents "…he didn't think that he could get close enough because of the Secret Service, but he planned to attack the agents first, and then attack Obama.""Mr. Miyashiro did not seem to retract from any of his threats when approached by Secret Service about threats made previously," Ching said. One neighbor told KITV she considered Miyashiro a very scary man and didn't want to go on camera out of fear of what might happen.Miyashiro's mother-in law told KITV he could be angry, but also very kind. She lived in an adjacent cottage and said he was an attentive caregiver after she was disabled by a stroke. He apparently became fascinated with assassination after another Kaneohe man, Mark David Chapman, killed John Lennon. Miyashiro was at the television station for Chapman's wife's press conference.A former television technician and self-described "gun nut" Miyashiro's repeated threats to the president-elect made the government take him seriously, despite his obvious mental illness. If convicted, Miyashiro could get five years in prison. If acquitted because of mental illness, he would be committed to a mental institution until considered safe for release.
