A 47-year-old Aiea man who pleaded guilty to raping a 13-year-old boy is now a fugitive.

Frank LeFrandt Jr. was expected to start serving his 10-year sentence on Monday, but authorities said he jumped bail and fled to the mainland.

LeFrandt was arrested in August after sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in the back of his newspaper delivery van.

Deputy Prosecutor Thalia Murphy said a deal was cut with the married father of two children to spare the victim from testifying.

Now LeFrandt is gone.

"The child lives in fear. The defendant took advantage of the system. He fled, but we're going to hunt him down. I'm going to have the U.S. marshals go after him and bring him to justice," Murphy said.

A judge issued a $5 million bench warrant Tuesday in Circuit Court.

Deputy Sheriff Thomas Cayetano testified that his department was told last week Tuesday by a bail bondsman that LeFrandt's car was found at the airport.

"The information I have is that he is on the mainland," Cayetano said.

Prosecutors said he is traveling under a false identity. His lawyers said they do not know where he is.

LeFrandt pleaded guilty in November to two counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault.

"It involves the penetration of a young boy -- a 13-year-old child. They have suffered a great deal. This very unusual plea agreement was negotiated so the child would feel safe," Murphy said.

"Why he's not here today I really can't speculate. We're hopeful that he will be found and that everything will work out OK," defense attorney Marcus Sierra said.
