Judge Rules Rodrigues Does Not Have To Pay

Prosecutors Wanted Money From Sabatini's Companies

POSTED: 2:41 p.m. HST November 27, 2002

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Gary Rodrigues and his daughter do not have to pay more than $300,000 to the government.

Federal prosecutors wanted the former United Public Workers union leader and his daughter, Robin Sabatini, to forfeit the money funneled from the union to Sabatini's companies. But U.S. District Judge David Ezra ruled in favor of Rodrigues and Sabatini.

A jury found Rodrigues guilty last week of 101 counts of mail fraud, money laundering, embezzling union assets and accepting kickbacks. Sabatini was found guilty of 95 counts against her.

Both await sentencing.
