HONOLULU -- Two men whose New Year's explosion maimed a girl, received less than a month in jail on Wednesday.

The victim's family is outraged.

It has been nearly four years since shrapnel tore through the hand of Cydnee Somera when she was 11.

"This incident caused me so much pain -- physically and mentally," Somera said.

Police photos only hinted at the violence of the explosion. Shrapnel shredded a car tire and Somera's left hand.

"Every time I closed my eyes I would see a pool of blood in my hand streaming down to my legs," Somera said in court. "I've been waiting three years for this day to come; waiting for justice to be served."

Brothers-in-law Joelson Ea and Marc Bantolina cleaned up evidence of the explosion and denied the prosecution's claim that they built a bomb out of acetylene, sand, a brick and a steel barbell.

"It's all about covering your own butt, trying to see how much you could get away with," Somera's father, Sidney, said.

The prosecutors said a year in prison would deter other amateur holiday bombs. However, the defendants -- family men with steady jobs and no criminal records -- asked to be spared jail time. They also apologized.

"The only thing I can say your honor is that I am sorry to the family," Bantolina said.

"Every year I am going to see this, every year, and it hurts too and I am sorry. I am embarrassed, I am ashamed what I done," Ea said.

Judge Richard Perkins gave Ea probation with 12 weekends in jail and Bantolina just two weekends.

"The harm that they caused was never intended," Perkins said.

Cydnee Somera cried in frustration while the defendants' families sobbed in relief.

"I'm disappointed because I think they deserved a little bit more, actually a lot more jail time than that," Cydnee Somera said.

"Weekends at jail, it doesn't cause as much hardship as this family continues to go through," Sidney Somera said.

The judge didn't explain why Ea, who confessed first, got 24 days while Bantolina got only four days. The men's attorneys call the sentence fair.
