Gusty winds whipping through the islands caused trouble on Tuesday.

On Oahu, the winds toppled a tree in downtown Honolulu, sending a man to the hospital. Traffic along South King Street was blocked off on Tuesday afternoon after a tree on the Iolani Palace grounds fell and struck a passing car.

Occupants in a Volvo got a big shock when a palm tree smashed down on their rooftop.

"The wind was just howling and the tree just came out of the sky and just hit that car full force," witness Phil Kleshick said.

A couple on the side of the street watched the tree come down.

"It was like a big whoosh and there was a huge thud and the car just jammed his brakes," Kleshick said.

Paramedics treated a man who is believed to be a passenger in the car was taken to Straub as a precaution.

Work crews were able to remove the tree from the roadway, but the blustery weather made some passers by a bit nervous about what else might come down. It is not clear if the tree was diseased or damaged by termites.

The state is asking an arborist to come down and inspect all the trees at Iolani Palace grounds.

"We try to check the trees of concern annually at least once. We have high winds today and I'm sure that was a factor,"

Hisano said the state may have to look at removing some of the taller trees that are too close to the street and could pose a threat.

The winds blowing through the island also wrecked havoc just a few miles across town.

High winds peeled back part of a rooftop at around 11 a.m. Fire crews responded to call of a blown roof at a building on Young Street.

The fire department said the section of roofing was loose and caused a leak in a third floor unit.

The Red Cross was called in to help a family of four living in the apartment.
