UH Hamilton Library Suffers Flooding DamageRoof Leak Damages 800 Books, Floods 2nd FloorPOSTED: 1:28 pm HST October 27,
2008 HONOLULU -- University of Hawaii officials are working to repair damage caused by flooding at Hamilton Library over the weekend.Water poured into the second floor sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, UH officials said.Heavy rains fell on the Manoa campus over the weekend. Debris clogged a drain on the third-floor roof, UH library officials said. The water pooled and poured through a seam between the old and new part of the building like a faucet, they said."It was coming through like you'd turned on your faucet in your sink. It was pouring like that out of the ceiling, hitting the floor and splashing up on books," assistant librarian Alan Grosenheider said. The water hit the second floor and damaged about 800 books, a librarian said. The water hit the floor and splashed onto the literature, general reference books and periodicals.Library workers took the damaged books to another part of the building. They also brought in dehumidifiers and fans to dry the area."The possibility of mold is incredible, and the damage that can be done to books from water is substantial," Grosenheider said. The library suffered a similar problem a year ago.The biggest flood hit the library on Oct. 31, 2004. That is when waves of water pushed through Manoa. Copyright 2009 by KITV.com All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. |
