EPA Fines Del Monte For Hazardous Waste Fine

Inspectors Say Kunia Facility Housed Hazardous Waste Without Permit

POSTED: 2:52 pm HST September 25, 2008

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Thursday fined Del Monte Fresh Produce Co. $190,000 for hazardous waste and oil violations at its Kunia facility.

EPA inspectors said that in August 2007 they found open unlabeled containers of hazardous waste at the facility and stored containers of hazardous waste without a permit. The inspectors also found evidence that used oil was released, the EPA said.

The company had ended its pineapple growing operations when the EPA conducted its inspection.

EPA officials said the company also did not have a response plan for hazardous waste and used oil spills, properly manage other wastes, respond to releases of used oil and comply with oil pollution control requirements.
