HONOLULU -- Less than a day after KITV broke the story of a city bus driver playing a video game while driving a bus, the driver is on unpaid leave and being investigated Wednesday.

The president of TheBus apologized for the incident and said he's "embarrassed" by it less than a month after another bus driver was arrested for drunk driving while operating a city bus.

These incidents worry bus riders, especially since more people are riding the bus because of high gas prices -- bus ridership went up 5 percent last month compared to a year ago.

Denita Waltz took pictures of the bus driver playing video games as she sat on the No. 54 bus from Pearl City to Punchbowl late Tuesday afternoon.

Walker said she thought, "What the heck is going on here?"

She said the driver also put his right foot on the dashboard, but the scariest part was when he played the video game.

"With two hands… at times, while he was driving in traffic, yes," Walker said. "And also at the stoplights, and at that point I was very scared."

"I replayed your newscast, and I was appalled by the video that I saw on the newscast,” Oahu Transit Services President Roger Morton said.

Morton said the driver is an 18-year veteran of TheBus with a generally good work record and just one minor accident in the last eight years. The driver has been suspended without pay while an investigation is underway.

"This is obviously inattention to driving and other very serious things. From our point of view, this is a very serious rule violation," Morton said.

Waltz called The Bus to complain at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday and bus officials said within 15 minutes a supervisor had stopped the driver's bus at the Alapai bus terminal. The supervisor counseled the driver, but allowed him to complete his route.

This incident comes less than a month after another bus driver was arrested for drunk driving while driving a city bus in Waimanalo. Court documents said 61-year-old Searle Pestana's blood alcohol rate was more than twice the legal limit and police said an open bottle of rum was found under his seat.

"Both those events are rare, rare events and both of them are the first time I've heard of either of those kinds of things going on. I'm frankly embarrassed to hear of them a month later," Morton said.

The driver who played his video game while driving could face discipline, ranging from a suspension without pay to termination.

Officials said the driver arrested for drunk driving will most likely be fired.
