A Nature Conservancy team on patrol around Kaneohe Bay found an illegal gill with more than a dozen dead hammerhead sharks.

The net was about 350 feet long and in the water for more than a day, Nature Conservancy representative Eric Conklin said.

Gill nets must be no longer than 120 feet, and fishermen must check their nets every two hours and pull them from the water in four hours.

The net appeared to have killed about 16 small hammerhead sharks.

The Kaneohe Bay area is the mating home for hammerhead sharks.
