Illegal Animal Fighting Could Lead To Land SeizuresHumane Society Offering $5,000 RewardPOSTED: 3:28 pm HST August 27, 2008 HONOLULU -- Federal and local law enforcement said they will look at seizing land when they crack down on animal cruelty involving illegal animal fighting and gambling.Cockfighting is allowed on Guam. However, the so-called "blood sport" is now illegal in all 50 U.S. states. Louisiana was the last holdout. The state law banning cockfighting went into effect on Aug. 15.Hawaii's law enforcement agents on Wednesday announced a campaign to crack down on violators."If you are allowing cocking fighting on your property, be prepared to lose it," U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo said. This month, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents seized a shipment of illegal cockfighting knives, or gaffs.Agents hope the new attack on seizing goods and gambling proceeds will send a clear message."What we are particularly interested in is the proceeds and instruments that cross our international boundaries support and promote these networks and organizations to continue fighting," ICE agent Wayne Wills said.Federal and local vice squads will be looking at the possible link between organized crime and illegal animal fighting. The Humane Society of the United States, which has just opened a local office is now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the illegal trade."There is no moral difference between dog fighting and cock fighting. Both illegal activities force animals to fight to the death for a sick form of entertainment," said Inga Gibson of the Humane Society of the United States. The reward money is currently offered in 14 other states. The hope is the money will help as a critical tool for law enforcement. Agents said they have begun to see heavy hitters in the gambling circuit travel for international derbies or cockfighting championship fights.Authorities said they plan to step up the pressure to curb the crime.
