The Navy is warning Hawaii commanders about a potential terrorist threat.

The threat came in the form of a letter to the FBI's Honolulu office, KITV 4 News first reported Thursday evening.

KITV 4 News obtained an e-mail sent between military officials. The e-mail says on Oct. 15, the FBI's Honolulu Office received a threat letter from a self-proclaimed former member of al-Qaida. The letter was postmarked from the mainland, KITV 4 News reported.

Threatening E-mailThe threat claims that a large shipment of explosives would be delivered to Honolulu for a "December attack against a U.S. Navy Base."

According to the Navy e-mail, the letter does not talk about the specific target or timing of the possible attack, but it did claim the shipment would come from France or Germany.

The military e-mail also said that write-in threats like this one are highly questionable.

The FBI confirms it did receive a "letter of concern" on Oct. 15, but a spokesman won't talk about where the letter came or other details about its nature. The FBI is remaining tight-lipped about the contents of letter, but a spokesman said the agency takes all threats seriously and it's investigating the letter vigorously.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating, including the FBI, the military, HPD and state sheriffs.

Civil Defense said at this point, our threat level remains at a low level.
