Protestors Disrupt Construction On Kauai Burial Site

Government Agencies Project Despite Number Of Ancient Burials

POSTED: 5:10 pm HST August 7, 2008

Protestors shut down a Kauai construction site Thursday because they said the state is allowing desecration of a sacred burial ground.

About two-dozen people marched on the site of a home being built by developer Joseph Brescia at Wainiha.

Government agencies approved the project despite a large number of ancient burials there.

Police asked construction workers to leave the site. About a half-dozen demonstrators attached themselves together in an effort to make arrests difficult.

It appears that Kauai police decided to wait the protestors out.

The developer's attorney said they are leaving it up to police to clear the site so construction will resume as soon as possible.
