UPDATED: 9:15 am HST August 6, 2008

The Department of Health said a record high 72 percent of beverage containers with deposits were recycled during the 2008 fiscal year.

That means about 680 million containers were redeemed for the 5-cent, or HI-5 deposit. That is up 4 percent from 2007.

DOH also announced that the container fee will remain at 6 cents for the deposit and container fee.

If more than 70 percent of cans and bottles are redeemed the state has the option of raising the fee to help pay for the recycling program.
