HFD Teams Fight Off Hawaii Kai Brushfire

Air 1 Drops Seawater On 5-Acre Fire

POSTED: 9:51 am HST July 18, 2008

Thirty firefighters battled a brushfire on Thursday in Hawaii Kai.

It started at 6:20 a.m. in a remote area across from the Hawaii Kai Golf Course.

The Honolulu Fire Department's helicopter Air 1 dropped seawater on the blaze, which had burned up to 5 acres of land.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed down the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail so crews could use the surrounding trails to get to the fire.

"We had firefighters hike in on trails about 15 minute plus walk from their staging area at the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. So, they are walking in with tools, brush beaters and back packs with water," HFD Capt. Terry Seelig said.

At one point, the fire flared up so firefighters temporarily closed a portion of Kalanianaole Highway so they could use the road for one of their trucks.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
