The rail transit war heated up Wednesday with opposing groups sounding off on the controversial issue.

A pro-rail group is trying to get residents who signed a petition to put the issue on the ballot to rescind their signatures.

The coalition claims their opponents are paying University of Hawaii students $1 to collect signatures.

If the anti-rail group can collect enough signatures, voters will get a say on the issue this fall.

Honolulu resident Jenny Chun said after talking with relatives, she regretted signing the petition and is asking her name be withdrawn.

"Not mislead, but not informed enough. It was my fault that I didn't find out enough about it," Chun said. "I think lots of people are just like me."

The pro-rail group said anyone who has a change of heart can find out how they can get their name off the list by logging onto their Web site at GoRailGo.org.

The group Stop Rail Now said so far it collected 35,000 signatures. It needs at least 9,000 more.

The anti-rail organization is threatening to go to court over what they said is misleading radio advertising.

The group does not think taxpayers' money should be used to promote the rail system.

"I said look we ought to write a letter to the mayor and tell him that what he is putting out is not true and that if doesn't pull it, then we will do something about it namely a lawsuit, but the main idea is to show him the evidence that his people are misleading him," attorney John Carroll said.

Rail spokeswoman Elisa Yadao released a statement saying the radio ads paid for by tax dollars are "factual and accurate."
