The family of a slain Waimanalo man Thursday forgave the family of the man police said killed the victim at Honolulu District Court.

Glenn Keohokapu Jr., 35, of Waimanalo appeared before a judge on the charge of second-degree murder. He is accused of stabbing and killing Steven Wilcox, 19, early Sunday morning outside a Kaneohe bar.

Shortly after his first court appearance, his family and Wilcox's family prayed together and then held each other.

"I have never asked the mom for their forgiveness, but she give to my family unconditionally. Something like I said I cannot imagine," Glenn Keohokapu Sr. said.

Glenn Keohokapu Sr. said he was stunned at how Wilcox's mother and stepfather reached out to his family. They even invited them to attend Wilcox's funeral.

"Nobody could show love. They love us. I cannot imagine the love they love us with. They've even forgiven my son and they've forgiven us," Glenn Keohokapu Sr. said.

When asked why they forgave the Keohokapus, Gwen and Charles Kailihiwa said it was because of their faith in God.

"Because I want to see my son again, and in order to see him again you need forgiveness in my heart," Gwen Kailihiwa said. "We got to pono and forgive, and we can live our lives happy because the world we live in now is not the beautiful world. We have to make it beautiful as much as possible."

Both families said it will be easier when justice is served.

"I always told my son, whatever you do, you've got to have to face the consequences whether good or bad," Glenn Keohokapu Sr. said.

However, he said he never imagined it would be this bad.

"I watch the news everyday, I don't want to watch it. I don't even want to listen because that's my son. I'm not proud of it, but I love him. I love him," Glenn Keohokapu Sr. said.

A preliminary hearing for Glenn Keohokapu Jr. is scheduled for Monday. He is being held on $300,000 bail.
