A Waimanalo man charged with murder in the death of a man witnesses called a good Samaritan had an extensive criminal record.

Glenn Keohokapu Jr., 35, is being held on $300,000 bail on second-degree murder charges. He was originally due in court Monday on domestic violence charges.

Keohokapu was arguing with his wife, Kauilani, outside a Kaneohe bar early Sunday morning, police said. Steven Wilcox, 19, who witnesses said, was drinking in the bar with the couple, intervened and Keohokapu stabbed him in the chest.

At the time of the stabbing, a restraining order was supposed to be keeping the Keohokapus apart.

"And it barred him from appearing within 100 feet of his wife," Deputy Prosecutor Doug Chin said.

In her temporary restraining order request in March, Kauilani Keohokapu said her husband was back on drugs, beating her and threatening her with a variety of potential weapons. She said she feared for her life.

Keohokapu's criminal record goes back 17 years. It includes burglary robbery, assault, abuse of a family member in 1996, parole violations and drug charges that got him five years in prison.

In April, Keohokapu was arrested again for violating his wife's TRO. Prosecutors said he was held on $1,000 bail, but Judge Faye Koyanagi waived the bail and released him despite his history.

"This was a convicted felon who on top of that was being accused of violating a court order anyway so it would make sense for someone like that to have some sort of bail on his instead of just being released," Chin said.

When the time came on Tuesday for Glenn Keohokapu's trial on the TRO violation at District Court, he was not there, neither was his wife. Three calls were made for each. When there was no response, a bench warrant was issued for Glenn Keohokapu. Bail was set at $11,000.

Despite the fears she expressed to the courts, Kauilani Keohokapu was with her husband when he was arrested Sunday night.
