A 50-year-old man was killed Monday in a construction accident at a condominium project on Kapiolani Boulevard.

It happened at about 11:23 a.m. at the Moana Vista condominiums.

The man was a concrete pump operator working with a boom.

Honolulu Police Department investigators said it appears that wind blew lines from a crane into the boom and caused it to spin around and hit the man.

"The crane actually caught the boom from the concrete pumper," Lt. Bennett Martin said.

The American Standard Concrete Pumping worker suffered massive head and facial injuries, officials said.

Paramedics treated the victim and took him to Straub Hospital and Clinic. He was pronounced dead at about 12:15 p.m.

"(He was) a great loving dad, always helping out, very dedicated to the company," co-worker Kawika Leopoldo said.

Leopoldo said Wong was helping train three of his sons. One was at Wong's side when he was struck.

"It's hard, tear jerking, very emotional," Leopoldo said.

Hawaiian Dredging is the general contractor on the Moana Vista. The company did not return KITV's calls on Monday. Construction was halted while police and occupational safety inspectors examined the site.

There were a number of workers in the area when the accident happened. One said most of them had their back turned when someone yelled, "Watch out."

The concrete pumpers are crewed by two men. They are operated by remote control on large jobsites.

American Standard Concrete Pumping President Greg Perrin extended his condolences to the Wong family and said Greg Wong was his best employee.

"Greg Wong, I miss you brother. Thank you for your support, help knowledge and everything else," Leopoldo said.

Wong was the fifth Hawaii construction worker to die in an accident since October. Officials are trying to understand why the state had an increase in annual construction deaths in recent years while overall injuries are down.
