A pioneering researcher at the University of Hawaii will receive an honor for his work on in vitro fertilization.

Ryuzo Yanagimachi is better known for developing the first cloned mouse at UH in 1990.

Scientists will honor him this weekend for his research that led to so-called "test-tube babies."

The honor comes as the John Burns School of Medicine at UH is in the running for a $10 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

"This center grant will support five of the younger faculty, three of whom were trained by Dr. Yanagimachi himself," said Steven Ward of the UH Institute for Biogenesis Research.

"We have a bunch of young talented people, but these days it's hard to get federal funding," Yanagimachi said.

UH also marked the scientist's 80th birthday, which will happen in August.
