Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a house fire in Nanakuli Tuesday night that left a family of eight people homeless.

The blaze started at around 9:15 p.m. on Mokiawe Street near Nanakuli High School and heavily damaged the house.

All eight residents were home at the time, but managed to escape unharmed.

"I heard crackling noises and I could smell smoke. I got up. I checked the room. It was on fire," resident Oliver Keolapililaau said.

A pet died in the fire.

Officials estimated damage at about $430,000.
