Controversial Church Plans Hawaii Protests

Church Blames Gay Tolerance For Turning God Into Country's Enemy

One of the nation's most outspoken anti-gay churches has targeted Hawaii for demonstrations this weekend.

The Westboro Baptist Church is known for picketing the funerals of American soldiers.

Several local churches face picketing Sunday by members of Westboro Baptist Church of Wichita, Kan., whose anti-gay hatred has been almost universally condemned by mainstream clergy. The group can make people so angry that local church groups urged KITV to do a story to prevent people from overreacting and giving the group the kind of confrontation it may be seeking.

The Westboro church is made up primarily of three Kansas families who believe tolerating homosexuality has turned God into America's enemy.

"This family and this church is totally un-American and are vicious to people who are American citizens," gay rights advocate Bill Woods said.

Westboro announced the Hawaii picketing with a flier, saying Hawaii's churches and U.S. military are mostly to blame for Hawaii's sinful, sodomite debauchery and decadence.

Our Lady of Peace Cathedral is on the picketing list. The Catholic Diocese would not comment except to say the police will be there. Most churches believe the best way to deal with this group is to avoid confrontation so that they get as little publicity as possible.

Also on the list is the 10,000-member New Hope Christian Fellowship, which gathers at Farrington High School. Its pastor said at first he was disappointed at being a target. Then he said he was flattered.

"That we are worthy of us being on their radar to come and picket, and so if that's the situation then we are happy," the Rev. Wayne Cordeiro said.

Cordeiro likens Westboro to a sickness. He said he plans to turn the other cheek.

"We are going to give them a place to do their picketing, and it'll be a hot day and we'll give them some water and it will run its course and be gone," Cordeiro said. "There're even some viruses that run their course and you'll be better."

The church's schedule for picketing also lists Word of Life Church, Kawaiahao Church, the USS Arizona Memorial, Schofield Barracks and Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

KITV was not able to reach Westboro Church directly to confirm its plans.
